Esports Margins: The Most Expensive Board We Measured

Esports is where margin hides best. Fans watch the match, not the price — and in our first sampling round, the numbers show exactly how much that costs.

Esports margins in our first sample ran far above football. Thunderpick — the esports reference book — sampled 7.79% (live 2-way) to 11.54% (3-way) on CS2 and Dota boards, versus 1.74–5.48% on football 1X2 at the same date (8 July 2026). single round, n<6

The sample table

Six rows, two books, one day. Live rows are badged; live and prematch prices are structurally different animals and we never compare them against each other directly — in-play margin includes the book's latency and game-state risk, prematch doesn't.

All prices captured 8 July 2026. Single sampling round; both books sit below our n≥6 bar, so no medians publish yet. "Inferred" means the game title wasn't labelled on the board — we identified it from the team names, and we record listing order exactly as displayed. See how we sample.

Why esports margins hide so well

Three things protect a fat esports margin. The 3-way board is the first: adding a draw or map-tie outcome gives the book a third leg to load margin onto, and most bettors never price the outcome they weren't going to back anyway. Odd formats are the second — a line like 10.18 / 2.55 / 1.60 doesn't trigger the "that looks expensive" reflex the way a familiar two-sided moneyline would, because nobody eyeballs three decimal prices into a percentage. The third is the audience: esports bettors are mostly fans of a team or a title, not line shoppers, so books face no competitive pressure to shave the overround. The result in our data: Thunderpick's sampled 3-ways all cluster around 11%, roughly 4–6x the cheapest football pricing we measured the same day.

Duel's rows cut both ways. Its live LoL 2-way at 3.87% was the cheapest esports price in the round — but its live Dota 3-way hit 13.71%, the most expensive row in our entire dataset. Same book, same day, same LIVE state: the market format drove the margin more than the operator did. That's the core lesson of this page.

Live ≠ prematch. Three of the six rows above are in-play. Live prices structurally carry extra margin (the US benchmark caps props and in-play at around 7%, per BettingUSA, June 2026), so a live 7.79% and a prematch 11.05% are not directly comparable — which is exactly why every live row wears a badge.

Depth and price are different axes

Thunderpick earns its esports-first reputation on coverage: 311 events listed when we checked logged-out — CS2 26, LoL 37, Dota 2 27, Valorant 36, plus the rest of the rail. No other book in our basket comes close on board depth. But depth is not price, and the sampled 3-ways priced at 10.98–11.54%. If your match only exists on one board, depth wins by default; if two books list it, convert the prices before you pick. The de-vig calculator does the conversion in seconds, and accumulated rounds land on the round-by-round history as each book crosses n≥6.

Common questions

Why are esports betting margins higher than football?

Three structural reasons. First, 3-way boards (win/draw/win or map-based formats) let the book spread margin across an outcome most bettors ignore. Second, odd market formats make mental price checks hard - almost nobody converts a 6.11-2.04-2.19 line to implied probability on the spot. Third, esports audiences skew toward fans betting on their team rather than price-sensitive bettors, so books face little pressure to compete on margin.

Which book is best for esports odds?

Depth and price are different axes. In our 8 July 2026 check, Thunderpick had by far the deepest esports board - 311 events listed across CS2, LoL, Dota 2 and Valorant - but the 3-way markets we sampled were priced at 10.98-11.54% overround. Duel's board is shallower but its live LoL 2-way sampled at 3.87%. With one sampling round and n below 6 per book, we publish no ranking yet; browse a board for depth, then convert the prices before betting.

Do live esports odds cost more than prematch?

Yes, structurally. In-play prices carry extra margin to cover the book's exposure to fast-moving game states and latency risk. That is why we badge every live row and never compare a live sample against a prematch one directly - the state of the market changes what a fair margin looks like.
